About the material: multilayer polymer casing

Plastic (polymer) casing is built from several layers of food-grade plastic laminated together — modern versions can include up to seven distinct layers. Each layer is engineered for a specific job: one might act as a barrier against oxygen or moisture, another might control flexibility or how the casing feels to the touch, and another might bond the layers together. Producing these multilayer structures requires specialized extrusion equipment capable of combining several plastic types into a single continuous tube.

This layered design lets manufacturers fine-tune a casing's properties for a specific product — shelf life, appearance, and handling can all be adjusted by changing the layer combination. While polymer casing has traditionally been used mainly for cooked sausages and cheese products, where a strong moisture barrier extends shelf life, newer formulations have introduced controlled water permeability, opening the door to using polymer casing for cured, air-dried products as well — something earlier plastic casing technology could not do.
